Internship Program—goals and objectives

 

The Internship goals and objectives are required to be set by the intern, the advisor and the manager at the beginning of the intershp as guiding principles for the 10-week internship program.

Definitions:

Goal: broad primary outcomes.

Strategy: approach taken to achieve a goal (Projects) (People).

Objectives: measurable steps taken to achieve a strategy (Design, Deliverable, to be able to do something) (Specific).

Tactic: tools use in pursuing an objective associated with a strategy (Access to something)

 

 

Goal #1:

Build on knowledge gained in the Master of Arts Program on Culture Communications and Technology at Georgetown including knowledge about relational database, information transmission protocols, and socio-technological analysis by observing how theories are applied to real business.

 

Strategy:

Read, observe and interact with cross-functional departments to learn about each area’s contributions.

 

Objective:

  1. Understand how architecture, algorithm, usability, and the socio-economic conditions present in the education market led to the invention and growth of Hobsons’ core products.

  2. Understand how clients are using the products.

 

Tactics:

    

  1. Meet with product management and data architecture to understand how the products have been developed and maintained.

  2. Meet with Policy and Advocacy (marketplace) to learn more about industry drivers.

  3. Interact with internal products (learning pages, product pages, help systems).

  4. Interact with internal teams to observe unique ways clients use products.

  5. Attend client training sessions.



 

Goal #2:  

To gain understanding about how Hobsons, a medium/large-scale technology company operates, with special focus on corporate culture and communications-- how departments cooperate and communicate with each other, how communication technologies facilitate communications at a company with more than 500 employees, and how communications enhance corporate culture.

 

Strategy:

Observe and interact with both the corporate communication team to understand global communication strategies and culture as well as individual teams (services, product, marketing, etc.) to understand inter-team and interpersonal communication strategies and cultures.

 

Objectives:

  1. Define business processes and business communications present at Hobsons.

  2. Identify corporate communication tools and other communication strategies.

 

Tactics:

  1. Gain knowledge through experience with corporate communication technologies including task management tool (e.g. Asana), time-management tools (e.g. Outlook calendar, Toggl), Internal knowledge-sharing forum (hiWire), distance communication tools (e.g. email, WebEx, Skype, Service Desk), and file-sharing tools (e.g. Google Doc).

  2. Experience daily interactions and communications (both face to face and distance) with colleagues from other departments, managers, and teammates.

  3. Meeting with Melissa Bookout on the Corporate Communications team.


 

Goal #3:

To apply previous working experience with Learning Management System (mainly Blackboard and Canvas) and learning management tools to discover how hobsons PKE team is utilizing tools and instructional design theory to disseminate knowledge to internal employees and external clients.

 

Strategy:

Serve as a contributing member of the PKE team.  

 

Objectives:

  1. Define different approaches to Instructional Systems Design.

  2. Define PKE’s documentation strategies and writing styles as well as other approaches.

  3. Identify learning management technologies being used by the PKE team.

 

Tactics:

  1. Gain an understanding of  PKE team’s roles and  responsibilities.

  2. Completing PKE projects as assigned.

  3. Interact with different learning management technologies.

 

 

 

Personal Goal:

To experience American working culture.

 

Strategy:

Interact with people, serve in project teams, and participate in Hobsons’ events.

 

Objectives:

  1. Identify cultural difference in business and corporate communications.

  2. Adapt to American and Hobsons working culture.

  3. Identify effective intercultural communication skills in business settings.

 

Tactics:

  1. Learn etiquettes for meetings and emails through Hobsons’ on-boarding training.

  2. Observe behaviors of colleagues.
